A 'Precious Journey' with Alessio Boschi
A visit to Alessio Boschi's booth at Baselworld 2017 was an immersion into his native country of Italy. Several cities get the jewel treatment in the expansion of the ‘Precious Journey’ collection - including Venice, Pisa, Rome, Florence, and Milan.
As is always the case with Boschi’s jewels, in this collection nothing is just as it seems on the surface. Hidden hinges reveal delightful secrets, jewels disassemble to create new pieces and every nook and cranny is treated with the utmost attention and high-quality craftsmanship.
A perfect example of this is the ‘Pisa’ ring. The bejewelled tower spins around, but is always tilting, and the pink sapphire top opens to reveal a pendant - which also splits to unveil a secret message.
Another detailed monument is the Colosseum in Rome. Two versions have been created - one as it was when completed, and one as it appears today. The soldiers, fighters, animals, weapons and insignia that were a part of these hallowed grounds can all be found on various surfaces.
For Milan and Florence, Boschi took elements of the city’s famed architecture to create elegantly glowing pieces in soft colors. The earrings in these collections are the standout for me.
And finally, Venice brings us more incredible rings, with the Bridge of Sighs, Rialto Bridge and a gondola being rendered in gems - sure to bring back memories for anyone who has spent time in the one-of-a-kind city.
