Object: Queen Victoria's Domino Box
A remarkable and rare piece of artistry is coming to auction by Christie’s in Geneva.
Queen Victoria wrote often in her diaries about her enjoyment of dominos and this set, which was passed down through several generations of the family, had once been her property.
Made in the early 19th century by Geneva firm Moulinié, Bautte & Cie, it is a musical dominos box made of 18k gold and overlaid with enamel and pearls. Inside, one finds 28 dominos also made of 18k gold, enamel and pearls.
No other similar piece is known to exist and you can read more about it (and see a video) on the Christie’s website here.
The box is part of the Rare Watches and a Rolex Afternoon sale on May 15 in Geneva.
